All Eyes on Jamia Nagar Men's Rally for Gender Rights- 2 September
Hundreds of people gathered to watch as men and boys in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area led a rally through the crowded lanes on September 2, raising slogans of gender equality. They also distributed leaflets on the issue and held up placards, prompting onlookers to enquire why women’s empowerment was an issue of concern for the men. A rallyist responded, “Men cannot be free till women are free.
CEQUIN, a MenEngage Global Symposium partner working on development issues in the area for over a decade, took the initiative of undertaking community advocacy on the themes of the Symposium. The rally was preceded by a discussion held at the Jamia Nagar Gender Resource Centre run by the NGO CEQUIN in which men and boys varying in age-group from adolescent to elderly met for an animated discussion on gender relations in their local and personal contexts. Following an introduction by Lora Prabhu, Saleem and Amin of CEQUIN, the MenEngage team of Shreeti and Dastagir guided those present through an examination of the current model of masculinity and the need for men and boys to take responsibility for gender justice. A short film, ‘Chuppi Todo (Break the Silence)’ was screened, sparking participants at the meeting to enquire, “What can we do to bring about change?”
