"Men of Quality are not Afraid of Equality"

Who We Are

MenEngage Delhi’s network started spreading its roots during the mobilization procedure of the 2nd MenEngage Global Symposium 2014 with the idea of engaging men and boys for gender justice. It’s an initiative to engage men and boys of the city especially the youth for gender justice. MenEngage Delhi with the patronage of Centre for Health and Social Justice and other partner organisations has reached out to several communities, Colleges, Universities, individuals and RWAs. It has reached out to Delhi’s youth with only one objective and that is to change the mindset of individuals about gender, masculinity and heteronormative lenses of sexualities that are prevailing in our society. With this new wave of engaging men and boys for gender justice through debunking aggressive masculinity, it’s time we strongly establish and expand this network that can reach out to the young boys and men within the urban settings. MenEngage Delhi will be a network of organisations, individuals, educational institutes, resident welfare associations and other entities that are either eager to learn about gender sensitization or are already working in this field. MenEngage Delhi will seek to consolidate the awareness work done in the months leading up to the Global Symposium.

We engage with

1.       Schools
2.       Colleges/Universities
3.       Communities
4.       Social Media

The core strategy will include training and capacity building; communication and information dissemination; support for reflection; developing collective actions on gender based violence and aggressive masculinities; and creating a space for sharing and linkages with broader social justice networks.

The strategy to approach each of these spaces would be different since the target audience in each of the above mentioned groups differs greatly from one another. For instance, our approach to reach schools would cater to the sensitive requirements of dealing on gender issues with a very young age group.

As an initial step, it will start with raising gender awareness, violence, sexual harassment, ragging, homophobia, self and anger, etc. through trainings, discussions and monthly meetings. The space created for reflection and engagement will help in challenging existing norms and practices and sensitizing people through advocacy and activism around gender justice. It will engage with larger society: school and college students, working professionals, middle class, corporate houses and with various other entities.

Across the city, MenEngage Delhi will start campaigns and interventions to encourage individuals in schools, colleges, RWA’s, corporates to play an active role and design collective actions towards bringing about a gender equal campus, neighborhood and offices. These interventions will include:

·         Support in creation of local groups that will lead the campaign
·         Regular interactions with the groups  to discuss  issues and to build awareness in wider community
·         To encourage personal and social commitment and action towards gender equality
·         Holding film screening/street plays/ games/ discussions on Gender justice issues
·         The group will help mobilize community/neighbourhood to actively participate on occasions like Labour Day, Women’s Day, and other social justice events, etc.
·         Strengthen relationships by engaging with other networks working on the issues.

The social media platform is critical to the process of providing visibility to the work as well as to critically engage with issues with like-minded people from across the country and the globe. MenEngage Delhi’s social media platforms will be used to provide visibility to groups that emerge from the process and to link them with each other to form the MenEngage Delhi network. Further, MenEngage Delhi’s Facebook page will be used as an interactive platform to advocate the ideas of gender justice. Also social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Youtube will be used as a larger advocacy platform to reach out to the individuals who can’t be reached through direct forms of engagements.
